CFA crews responded to a fire at the old Lilydale fire station on Main Street on Tuesday 25 May around 11pm.
Witnesses stopped and called 000 when they saw smoke bellowing from the roof of the building.
District 13 CFA Commander Matthew Hirst said upon arrival crews found that the building was well involved with fire.
Mr Hirst said the building has been abandoned for a number of years and had been boarded up making it quite an effort to get inside.
Due to the nature of the fire it has been deemed suspicious by fire investigators and the matter is now with police.
Mr Hirst doesn’t believe any severe structural damage has occurred but there was significant smoke damage.
The process of boarding up the building again happened throughout the morning of Wednesday 26 May.
More to come.
