With temperatures expected to reach into the mid to high 30s for the rest of the week, VicEmergency has reminded people to be cautious when out and about.
“Severe heatwaves can be dangerous and put vulnerable people at risk. Those at a heightened risk include older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions, and people who are unwell,” a VicEmergency social media post said.
The weekly forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology indicates for the Yarra Glen area temperatures will reach 35 degrees on Wednesday, 33 on Thursday, 34 Friday and 38 degrees on Saturday before dropping on Sunday to 25 degrees and cloudy.
UV indexes are meant to be ‘extreme’ each day from around 9am to 5.30pm, so people are reminded to slip, slop, slap, seek and slide to stay protected when outside.
VicEmergency offers the below advice for keeping cool and healthy:
Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre.
Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home.
If available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool.
Drink plenty of water.
Never leave kids, adults or pets in cars – the temperature can double in minutes!
Keep up to date with weather forecasts (http://www.bom.gov.au/) and plan essential activities for the coolest part of the day.
Check in on friends and family who may need help.
