Three million free masks to be handed out across Victoria

Free N95 and KN95 masks will be handed out at state-run testing sites, community health services and the throughout the public transport network across Victoria.

On Tuesday 9 August, Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas announced over three million masks would be handed out over the next four to six weeks.

“Providing masks free of charge to those who need them most will help them protect themselves, their loved ones, and Victoria’s hardworking healthcare workers,” Mr Andrews said.

People who attend a testing site for a PCR test or free RAT will receive a box of 10 N95 masks with instructions on how to wear them properly. Boxes will also be distributed at multicultural and multi-faith events, Aboriginal gatherings and from PTV hubs.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners welcomed the mask plan, with President adj. Prof. Karen Price urging Victorians not be complacent.

“The expert advice is clear that masks limit community transmission of Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses including influenza,” she said.

“I know that wearing a mask isn’t fun and can be slightly uncomfortable but remember that taking this small step can help drive down Covid-19 numbers across Victoria.”

Authorised PTV officers and some train station staff will also carry masks to hand them out to the public.

“Wearing a mask, staying up to date with your vaccinations and ensuring indoor areas are well ventilated are all steps Victorians and businesses can take to manage their own Covid-19 risk this winter and into the future,” Ms Thomas said.
