Stay safe in summer – tips from the CFA

The holiday period is often a time for family celebrations and holidays — whether that means camping by the river, travelling interstate, or exploring the beautiful expanses of Victoria.

However, it’s also a time to remain vigilant, as bushfires can strike unexpectedly in your local area or your holiday destination.

Whether you’re hitting the road or staying at home, it’s essential to be prepared.

Key steps to stay safe:

Download the VicEmergency app and ensure it’s active on your phone.

Save the VicEmergency Hotline phone number: 1800 226 226.

Know the Fire Danger Rating for your location or destination — ratings include Moderate, High, Extreme, and Catastrophic (used nationally).

Understand official warnings: these may be issued as Advice, Watch and Act, or Emergency Warning.

Never drive towards smoke. Always make a safe U-turn and check the VicEmergency app for updates.

Know your Fire District, such as Central, Mallee, Wimmera, or others across Victoria.

Be aware of fire restrictions. Understand where and when fires are prohibited.

Know what a Total Fire Ban means and comply with all restrictions.

Have a Bushfire Survival Plan. Fires can occur with little warning, and preparation can save lives.

This is a brief summary of the essential information every Victorian should know.

Your safety – and that of your family – could depend on it.
